It's, all about context. Take Lord of the Rings; Being chased across the world by deathless, sword wielding, faceless people, who know exaclty where you are whenever you use your most useful asset, and want nothing more then to kill you and loot your corpse - that's scary. The small freakish monster, however was befriended at the end of the first book.
I think what really makes evil scary is having power over another. If your unexpected, or abnormal, then you can frighten people, and thus have power over them. Take the Ring for this one: The Girl wouldn't be nearly as scary if you could easily fight her off.

I don't find the context scary- neither did I find gollum 'evil'. He was interesting, but not evil. I'll agree with your second statement, however.

Evil is subjective, I admit, but when your willing to cheat, lie, steal, and kill to get something you want, ring magically controlling you to act tat way or not, your pretty evil, victim or no.

Perhaps. I don't really believe in 'evil' to be honest, although there are a few things I would label that anyway. *thinks* But I think I'll agree with you. If I am going to label anything, then I suppose I should label gollum.

I'd label Gollum as a chav.
