Anyway, I'm off to worship satan...
(Seriously though, I'm christian too.)

Me too, lol. (or at least I believe most of the things a "christian" does, complicated subject...) We should start a chat room. Cool down, Jo, a lot of modern day missionary work is about helping people in need and just letting them know what you believe. I can't really speak on Tom's behalf, but I've done some short term mission. But yeah, this isn't really the place.

At Tom; that sounds fantastic. It's very selfless of you to consider missionary work.
At Elgen: please, understand, I am not angry because you are not Christian. I am angry because you have attacked someone's beliefs and plans for the future based on ignorance.
Christian missionaries don't even always do everything 'as christians', that is to say the way the rest of the world sees evangelicals, constantly shoving bibles down the throats of others. They work with street crime, with convicts, with terrorrists, with AIDS orphans and simply to improve the quality of other peoples lives. They do this because they believe in love, in a divine being who wishes them to (but does not force them to) express that love and to care for others.
Being a missionary is not about forcing others to believe what you believe. It is about helping others because you believe in something beyond your own life and needs.
And in certain places of the world, Christians go as missionaries to help other christians, who are persecuted, imprisoned, and even executed for their beliefs.
Respect the beliefs of others, please.
And I'm sorry that the Christians hereabouts have all borne down on you like this, but that was kind of offensive, and without provocation. I won't tolerate fanatics around here; Christian, Hindu, Muslim or Atheist. It's just vicious.

Satanism's still cool then?

Well, I kinda phrased it as a question, but sure, it wasn't very nice. But the experience I've had with missionaries are people who's sole purpose is walking around the streets, knocking on doors and trying so save our souls. I have great respect for the work other missionaries might do, helping people and such, I really do.

Cool. And I have to say, I am usually put off by folks knocking on doors and trying to save my soul. But as long as they're polite about it and go away when I ask, it doesn't bother me too much? In that respect, they're only as bad as a door-to-door salesman. *shrugs* Mind, if they linger, mention my sins, or are in any way rude, I act very unchristianly. *embarassed* Not sure if anyone has noticed, but I have something of a temper. ---- On an unrelated but on-topic note, I am beginning to think I might like to work with animals.

Well, I'm very sorry that that has been your main perception of Christians...I can't say I approve of the door-to-door fellows, as it certainly doesn't seem to be effective, but maybe it is for some people, I don't know.

@illusionary: What kind of work were you thinking of going into? Veterinary medicine, research, biology...?

Perhaps not as glamorous, but just as important.

Hm, nice. Even if you're going to be an author, it's always smart to have something to fall back on anyway.

Elgen, not a fall-back, something else I really want to do. It's not a 'since writing can't be my job', it's a 'omg I love animals, and want to do something about it!' Which reminds me, I am going for my initial visit to Swindon & District Animal Haven this Saturday, after which I will be volounteering there to gain experience until term starts in September. It's really wierd for me to be exicted about any line of work... I've always had loads of stuff pushed onto me that I never wanted, and now there's just so much I want to do and learn!

What university do you attend/do you plan on attending?

College and Uni are different in the UK. You go to college, then Uni. I am going to college. I've applied at the Lackham chapter of Wiltshire College, who specialise in working with animals and outdoor careers. Two years there, and then possibly two years of vet nurse college and training, and then two-four more years at Uni if I so choose, but you can get degrees in this area without attending University the traditional way. I'm really excited, even though it's a bit of a long commute- I thought I'd have to go much farther than this, and the college is really good.

Oh yeah, the Uni/college thingy in various countries... What a blast.
But that sounds cool. Very cool. Animals are cool. And stuff. Yeah.
