OOC: *Cracks his knuckles* Ugh... Fallout 3, Fable 2, and Dead Space all in a short amount of time... I've been ignoring this for too long. Now. Time to try and switch my Evilness to a good character. *Shakes a fist at IN.*
IC: Aethesh simply raised his gaze from the book in front of him, as he slowly turned one page, fixating it upon the fox that had bounded up onto the table in front of him, just standing there on the polished mahogany as though it were perfectly natural for a fox to be in the center of a library. The sheer... nonchalance of it made Aethesh smile slightly, even if he was getting a few strange looks from the others that milled about the library, as well as a few angry whispers from a certain little group in the corner, with their noses buried in tomes that they could likely bludgeon a dragon to death with.
"Well, in that case, you certainly are a strange acquaintance, you and your master." He admitted, returning his gaze back down to the book in front of him, scanning over the words once more. Though he may be speaking with a familiar, he had come here for a reason, and Aethesh never allowed anything to dissuade him from his goals. At least, unless something more important came up, but just yet, he considered this an interesting little sidetrack, nothing more. "Very well. It is your choice whom you fall in with."
After a moment's pause, Aethesh slowly raised his gaze to the fox again, still just sitting there on the table. "You know... I don't think they allow pets in here, and I earn enough looks with my... uniqueness, without sitting and chatting away with a fox, the voice of which appears to sound only in my head. Especially when it's staring at me like a hawk sizing up a mouse. Quit that." With that, his eyes dropped right back down to the book, awaiting this fox's master.
OOC: I'll put in my new character whenever I think of something for him to DO. XD

Silence
The fox, with a most disturbingly un-animal-like expression, grinned at Aethesh, making it even more clear that he was no simple beast. "She comes..." the fox informed the warlock. "And she will avert the attention of the others..."
Silence approached, having sensed her familiar's wish to see her, seeming perfectly calm to outsiders, but her irritation bounced along their empathic link- she was yet too weak a sorceress to have an actual telepathic link with her familiar. "Griffin," she said as the fox recoiled. "Scout, and draw less attention to yourself. Rules are as before."
"Yes mistress," the fox replied as he hopped down from the table. "I was only playing with him..." With a flash of his white tipped tail, he disappeared out of sight.
Silence sighed: the danger of choosing a fox for a familiar was that they had a certain mischeivous nature that lingered from their original form. Griffin in particular seemed to enjoy shocking people- part her influence, part his, Silence surmised.
Now that she was here with the warlock, she did not stare nor start a conversation. The first thing the disguised tiefling did was take a seat across from him, careful not to show too much interest, and then she whistled briefly: the sound was somehow soft rather than piercing, and all those that had been shooting dirty glances at Aethesh suddenly found themselves losing interest in the warlock.
It was then that Silence turned her full attention to Aethesh. "Greetings," she said, her expression curious. "I'm afraid the information transfer between myself and my familiar is strictly verbal, so I do not know your name." Not entirely true- it was empathic as well- but the lie came easily from her lips. She was so used to keeping back small pieces of information, it was completely natural for her. "I'm curious as to what brings a warlock to the Lady's ball... surely not competing for her hand in the tournament?" She arched on eyebrow at him. She'd met a lot of warlocks, and they were all rotten to the core. Usually interesting company. "My name's Silence Darkwood, by the way. My furry companion is Griffin."

Aethesh turned his gaze onto the other page, reading steadily as a woman came and sat down across from him. Despite her nonchalance, she had an air about her that seemed to scream that he was the one that he had been waiting for. After all, who else would have just randomly come over and sat down to speak with him, especially after addressing the fox that had come to pull Aethesh out of his work?
Licking his gloved fingers, a completely useless, but idle gesture, he turned the page to reveal the last part of Meyanok's chapter just as Silence began to speak. He lent her half an ear as she introduced herself, and informed him of the nature of her bond with her familiar, but he didn't actually speak until he finished the final page, closing the book with a soft *Thump*. Once that was completed, he set the heavy tome aside, sighing as he turned his gaze onto Silence.
"A small word before I get to know you, Silence." He said almost off-handedly. "I know much about the realms of magic, and the arcane. I consider myself somewhat of a scholar on the subject. Should you try and trick me about such a subject again, know you'll be called out on it." He said fluidly, leaning himself forward slightly to fold his arms in front of himself on the table.
"Your familiar summoned you here without needing to actually go and tell you it, as he remained sitting in front of me the entire time. He informed me of your approach before you were in sight, showing that he is at the least connected to an extent to sense your proximity and your general direction. Your familiar expressed a desire for you to actually meet me. Note that he did not actually say that you had requested him to do so, meaning that he had simply taken it upon hismelf."
"Most familiars, a byproduct of magical connection, would have at the least some manner of a empathetic connection with their masters, and later on it becomes completely telepathic as well. Now, I know you have at the least some magic capability... those people over there didn't just change their minds about me for no reason, after all. Cute little trick with the whistle, though." He sounded as though he were giving a school class lecture as he flicked his gaze over to those that had been previously looking his way with rather irritable gazes.
Turning his gaze back to Silence, he sized her up quickly. Rather attractive, apparently somewhat powerful, with a familiar, and steeped in the realm of magic. Ah, it was so wonderful to see another spell slinger. Well, not that Aethesh actually used spells at all. "Even the most amateur of sorcerors can manage at the least an empathetic connection with their familiars. So I'll take it that you're simply cautious, but do try to be cautious about information in an area where I don't have the information already."
Then, Aethesh smiled. For one that oftentimes looked so serious, the change that it brought his gaunt face was astonishing. He almost looked kind, though that would have been a gross miscalculation on anyone's part. "Now then. Even if your connection is to the point where it's telepathic, I didn't tell my name to your familiar anyway. I am Aethesh. Don't worry if you can't pronounce it, a few people have trouble. And, the reason that I am in the tournament... Is my own business. I simply need to get closer to the fair lady, and the intrigue that wraps around her. This tournament, is my way of doing so. Win or lose, I don't much care. I'll have my purpose served anyway."
He tilted his head slightly, his gaze going from pleasant to curious, though he had been curious a while now. Ever since that familiar appeared, as a matter of fact. "What about you? Surely, you aren't just here to observe things."

The estate was a large one, without even factoring in the sheer size of the gardens in front of it, through which the ball guests and tournament hopefuls entered. While nothing compared to a Lord's castle or Duke's manor, it was still something to gawk at, a show of the prestige and power of its owner and their family. That prestige and power is what allowed for such a tournament and ball to even preside.
While the battle ground was adjacent to the gardens, separated by a wall of marble and granite stones, it was an elegant wooden door that sealed the entrance from the gardens to the entrance hall of the manor. Or used to, as it was now open and remained so thanks to guards, allowing tournament entrants and ball attendies to come and go under their watchful gaze.
But while the multitude of guests wandered the estate, be it the Dining hall with the selection of foods and refreshments, the gardens, the Library, or even the Lounge Room, the mistress, lady, very star of the show was holed up in her room upon the second floor, making preparations to look presentable when she watched the tournament.
Arlene Hartway (OOC: If her last name is predetermined, do tell me) had already chosen her apparel for the occasion. A tight corset held her rounded bosom close to her chest, and was covered by the carefully sewn burgundy blouse, hemmed in pearl laces. The blouse was a part of the overall ball gown, which reached to her ankles and flowed out like a large bell. A matching pair of opera-length gloves covered her arms in burgundy, and they too had laced hems. The overall affect was rather stunning and a tasteful, but not excessive display of her fortunes.
Now, as one of her servants entered the room, she was busy deciding how best to wear her curled raven hair. Still combing it as she thought, she turned around in her chair to look at the handmaiden questionably.
"Mistress Hartway." The maid servant gave a small bow, and Arlene smiled sweetly.
"News from the registrar?" She asked, turning back to her vanity set and continuing to comb her locks.
"Yes, mistress. Many warriors have registered, as well as a selection of the more... magically inclined." Arlene's eyes widened in surprise, but she reverted back to her smile soon after.
"Well, so long as they are not thrice my age and working the more... distasteful... arts, I see no problem with any of them winning the tournament." She responded, briefly wondering what kind of husband a powerful sorcerer might make. "Any other news, Prescilla?"
"Yes, Mistress. Lady Fanchon Soulbreach of Zhentil Keep has arrived."
At this news, Lady Hartway was caught off-guard, and stopped combing her hair to look at her own reflection rather critically. Great... competition. I'll have to see to that being reduced swiftly. As stunning as she was, Arlene knew any competition could drag that Handsome Prince away from her, and leave her with the Mediocre Man. That was the last thing she wanted.
"Seek out Lady Soulbreach, and inform her that I wish to greet her formally in the second floor Common Room. It is still closed off to the guests, yes?" Arlene demanded, but even her order came out softly and daintily. But there was no doubt she meant business in her words.
"Yes."
"Very well. Thank you, Prescilla." As the maid servant left the room, Lady Hartway returned to combing her curled locks. Hmm... maybe just letting it fall over my shoulders... a few good, big curls there, the rest in the back... that might do, yes. --------------------- Herista moved away from the Dining hall table, carrying a full tray of assortments of meats, fruits, and vegetables, and a mug in the other hand with which to wash the majority of it down. She could have taken one of the many benches in the Entry Hall, but with Jyril in the trees in the gardens, and that lovely evening breeze blowing in the air, she felt far more inclined to sit outside.
And if my watcher continues his task, then I may need to pay a small bit more attention. Not sure why a man would want to stalk me though. I'm armed to the teeth and not your common appearance. Herista reasoned with herself as she hefted the tray out into the cool gardens, and placed herself on a marble bench, folding her legs underneath her.
But then again... it's all a matter of taste, I guess. Shrugging to herself, she set the tray beside her and the mug to her other side, and speared a piece of ham with her fork, before devouring it. As she ate she swayed side-to-side, as if rocking in the breeze.

He tilted his head slightly, his gaze going from pleasant to curious, though he had been curious a while now. Ever since that familiar appeared, as a matter of fact. "What about you? Surely, you aren't just here to observe things." SilenceA smile spread across Silence's lips as Aethesh called her out and threatened her. This was why, despite all good intentions, she found kind and pleasant folk to be boring. They were all rather stupid, to say the least. I suppose there's only so much of my nature I can deny... she thought. "You are correct, Aethesh," she replied, pronouncing his name exactly as he had- bard's were good for mimicry, among other things. "I am, in all honesty, a poor sorceress. I was born with the power, but I found it dull and unengaging. Hence why I turned to the Bardic arts of manipulative magic: much more satisfying..." The Bardic arts- few who were not Bards knew of the special gift of the arcane Bards- the ability to affect minds and moods, and other such 'tricks' and enchantments. She remembered her plan with the tournament, and made a mental note not to try and ruin the warlock's game. While ultimately it would work, he could well blow her head off afterwards. Warlocks were a bit tetchy like that. She adjusted her seat somewhat, moving her lute to hang off the chair by her side. When she'd finished, she looked up, and continued, "I am in all honesty just here to observe- well, meddle, really. Criminal activity in Neverwinter is at an all time high, and I don't like things to go on without my knowing it." For a moment, her expression darkened, as she added, "And there are a lot of people here I don't want to see an example made of." She felt no fear in showing that she was no dark killer or soulless assassin- Silence was not one to backdown, nor pander to another's wishes for no reason. She realised that this dark warlock might not like to sit and chat with a 'do-gooder', as he would undoubtedly view her (evil folks were so judgemental), but then, the fact that she actually cared about anyone other than herself was one of her most interesting traits, considering her personality. She paused, and added, "That, and I like messing with the outcome of tournaments. I'll keep out of your way, though: I have no wish to see my head on a platter, thanks." The corner of her lips quirked up in a lop-sided grin. "I'm careful like that."

Perum eyed the half-human as she wandered away from the table. She was cautious, and calculating. Perhaps alert was a better word. He let his eyes flow back towards those around the table after a few moments.
Patience was not one of Perum's virtues. Logically, he knew that the more time he had, the more he could examine his opposition, and be better prepared for the tournament. But the halfling was but tapping his foot, waiting for the fighting to start.
---
Not very far away, even the heroic Lord Nasher Alagondar was becoming impatient as well. Dressed in heavy ornate armor, the aging champion was beginning to dislike the wait. It did not show to anyone but for himself, his discipligned body holding himself upright and proud.
He stood amongst the people, staring quietly at a destroyed statue. It was only a few hours past noon, and already something was vandalized. He did not appreciated such liberties some of the people of his city were taking. He was sure that the Lady would not appreciate having her property destroyed, either. He ran a hand across the top of his balding head, the movement illicting very little sound from his armor.
He wore a set of light blue steel, with a similar cloak across his shoulders. The symbol the Just God, Tyr, was proudly emblazoned on his chest, bringing to the attention of all his title and name.
To the casual onlooker, he would appear to have lost all his focus on the broken statue, but was in fact very active in observing the crowds around him. The warring criminal factions were going to do something here, he knew it. He also knew that it wasn't all put upon him to be worrying about the war in his city's walls, he had a most trusted adviser helping him, and his captains, as well.
He turned away from statue, towards the main foyer of the Lady's Estate. He would check yet again with the Inspector while he waited for the Lady to finish her preparations and begin the true festivities. "Inspector!" He said, after searching for him for a moment. He briskly made his way to his aide, and upon reaching him, spoke softly, "Is everything in order? No trouble yet?"

"Ah, so you know of the gang war. In a somewhat intimate fashion, from the way you speak. I've only heard of it recently myself; hopefully it won't interfere with our evening festivities.", she lied convincingly. In truth, she'd heard of it through her dreams and various divinations, from no less than the Black Lord Himself. He hadn't deigned to reveal His motivations or intentions, but those were hardly a matter of concern for her. One did not question Him, merely served.
"At any rate, the competition should provide some entertainment. Perhaps I shall bet on you, you seem like the type to know your way around a battlefield, unlike some of the other entrants I've seen thus far.", she said, taking another sip of her wine, "But perhaps I'm getting ahead of myself. If you'll excuse me, I must take my leave for the moment. We'll most likely speak again after the tournament has concluded.", she said with a slight nod before heading into the manor hall proper.
She had some work to do.

Whatever work Lady Soulbreach had in mind would have to wait, however, as a certain handmaiden approached the armored woman. As she came down the stairs she looked at Fanchon repeatedly, before deeming it was indeed the Lady of Zhentil Keep. After this affirmation of appearance, the maidservant approached.
"Lady Soulbreach? My mistress wishes to meet with you, in the Common Room on the second floor."

Fanchon stopped and regarded the woman for a moment, considering very briefly of refusing. Logic quickly prevailed, she was here in an unofficial capacity but outright spurning the local nobility would be far too undiplomatic, no matter how pathetic they might be.
"Ah yes, I had supposed she'd send for me. Very well. Please lead the way, I am not familiar with the layout of this manor.", she said with a polite smile, searching her mind for the name of the hostess.
Hartway., she thought. Although they'd never met, Fanchon knew a bit of her by reputation. Supposedly, she was one of the more beautiful women of Neverwinter, as well as one of the richest. And most spoiled.
Should prove interesting to see how much she knows of me, at least. And a bit of scouting in a normally locked off area should prove most useful if any fighting starts.

OOC: Think good, think good, think good... Think good... CURSE YOU ILLUSIONARY FOR GIVING ME A GOOD CHARACTER! I'm a villain, damn you! >_<
Bah, one Lawful Good, coming right up...
Chief Inspector Soujourn
The Inspector was standing with his back to the main foyer, his gaze locked on the window in front of him, which overlooked the main streets. One hand, gauntleted in ornate blue steel in the image of his lord and master, Lord Nasher, was fiddling with the equally ornate golden handle of his longsword, trailing his fingers slowly around its pommel. He always looked such when he was thinking, along with the glazed look that corroded his normally sharp emerald eyes.
The Inspector was a fair man, and surprisingly young for his lofty station. His face still held all the traits of his youth, as though he were a boy freshly brought from his early life, slapped in a suit of armor, and told to guard the Lord. His cheeks were still sharp and firm, standing out against fair skin as pale as the moon. His hair was still deeply colored, a fiery red that would have seemed more at home on a woman's head than a warriors. Yet he still kept it carefully trimmed in an almost military style, cropped close to keep up his appearance. His chin was proud and jutting, protruding beneath lips that were taut and thin, as though he always had a serious thought on his mind. And, most of the time he did. His nose seemed to be the only part of him that wasn't sleek and sharp, as it was the only part of him that showed signs of actual battle experience.
Even though it looked like it might have been fair like the rest of him at one point, his nose twisted cruelly in the center, where he had been hit in the face by the pommel of a sword during a skirmish with one of the many, many thieves that seemed to be plauging Neverwinter, and indeed, this city in particular. He had subdued the thief, of course, as Soujourn always saw to it that he caught every criminal that he set out to find. Preferably alive, as he was more interested in bringing them to trial than slaying them where they stood, but sometimes there were a few that were necessary to kill... Even if he didn't necessarily like it.
He shifted from one leg to another, his powerful frame, as he was 6'2 and weighed over 200 pounds, dipping slightly to one side as he eased his weight onto his left leg. His left leg was another part of him that seemed not to actually carry the same near flawlessness of his face, though this was not through battle but through genetics. A birth defect, that had slightly shortened the leg and made the ball of his hip slightly less inclined to move. This affected his movements something terrible, and it was hard on him to run for more than a few moments and even then it was slightly clumsier than normal, but he made do...
It was at this point though that he realized that Nasher was speaking to him, and he quickly turned, facing his Lord. Removing his hand from the hilt of his sword, he balled it into a fist, and placed it over his heart, bending himself slightly at the waist in a small, courteous bow. "My Lord, I apologize. I was deep in thought, and I may have missed your words... What was it that you require of me?" He asked formally, keeping his gaze respectfully on the ground before him.
Warlock Aethesh
"That's very wise of you. Though I think you would find it rather difficult to interfere with a design that you do not completely know the details of... You may even end up indirectly helping me." Aethesh pointed out, his smile only deepening. Most of the people that he spoke so boldly to usually were insulted and left. But not this one... No, this bard dabbling in the arcane was certainly a unique one. She even seemed to ENJOY the fact that he had been so direct.
"I am not certain just whom you see fit to protect, though it isn't my concern either. Your goals are your own, just as mine are my own." He dismissed her 'do-goody' attitude with a wave. It wasn't his concern just what people thought of his nature, nor was it his concern about others. They simply would prove their usefulness to him, or they would become and obstacle and die. Or, they would stay out of his way, and live. Any way it fell, was the way it fell. "Your meddling however, could interest me. Just what is it that you intend to do to the competitors in this... fine tournament?"

OOC: You try too hard to be a villain, Web. it just makes you a hero desperate for infamy but stuck with fame. By the way guys: Beacon may take a little while, the new OP is taking a lot of thought... IC: Silence considered Aethesh's words for a moment, before saying plainly, "I can interfere with many plans. A bard's strength is their versatility, the ability to adapt to situations and play to the audience's strengths and weaknesses..." She paused and continued, "I plan, for the most part, to use music to affect the outcome. I'll sing a curse song to those I wish to hinder, and play a blessing to those I wish to see succeed. I can distract the attention of some, or give strength and determination to others..." she shrugged. "All without anyone being any the wiser. Nobody- not even those under my power- suspect that music could have such an effect..." she gave a wry smile, adding, "And nobody is really capable of defending against it. Understand that I'm telling you this to prevent the temptation to bewitch your game. Instinct says that, whether you had known it was me or not, it would not have ended well for me to curse your match." She leaned back in her chair slightly, and enquired, "But what exactly is your plan? If you use magic, you'll be sent to prison. If you kill your oponent, you'll be likewise. I must ask: how great is the sword of a warlock, really? I would have thought that without eldritch on your side, you'd be somewhat at a loss..." -------------- DesnyDesny lounged near the court in which the tournament would take place. His eyes roved the crowd, and for once he kept his succubus' charm toned down, not wishing to deal with any admirers at that moment in time. He had the distinct impression that his sister was near... he'd sensed something, an arcane presence so subtly powerful that he'd only noticed it because he'd attuned himself to it. But he'd seen nothing of her, nor heard her song. His senses twitched: a flash of red in the corner of his eye, and a glimmer of magic. He twitched his fingertips, and in a whirl his familiar appeared, the demonic rabbit looking up at him for direction. "Contain Griffin... use whatever means necessary to get her attention." the rabbit hared off like a shot, while Desny stood, a mixture of indignation and amusement about him. Silence has no right to be here, meddling in my affairs. I thought she'd gotten the message last time, that she is not welcome in Neverwinter- nor even Faerun, should I find her....
Well, she'll learn it this time. a dark smile twisted his lips. I did miss you, sister dearest...

After walking down a few halls, all decorated richly with ample candlelight and paintings, the servant stopped before a door. She opened it, and held it open for the Lady. The room was a simple Lounge, a meeting area with no other intent or purpose except to display trophies and diplomatically discuss across a table. While not the largest room in the manner it was hardly small, and the floor was a glossed oak, covered by an intricately weaved rug. A fireplace of granite sat across from the door, a large buck's head mounted above it. Various well-conditioned weapons hung from the walls, and china cabinets held glass and china tableware in display. The fire was already burning, casting its glow upon the two plush couches that ran parallel before it. Between them was a thin red mahogany table with a bouquet. Lady Arlene Hartway was already sitting on one of the couches, and motioned politely for Lady Soulbreach to take the other.

Giving a nod of respect, Fanchon took a seat on the indicated couch as she looked about the room.
"To what do I owe the pleasure of this audience, Lady Hartway? I sholud tell you that I'm not here in any official capacity, merely for pleasure.", she lied smoothly. She most certainly was here in an official way for both herself and the Church of Bane, but not in any capacity for Zhentil Keep.
I must be cautious. I cannot let her know that I am one of the high ranking members of Bane's church, or that Bane himself has been reborn. That secret will be out of the bag soon enough.

IC: Aethesh laughed despite himself as Silence pointed out that she could sing to alter the outcomes. "Oh yes, I did not remember that. Lord knows, no one will notice the magic in your singing if they are anything even remotely resembling intelligent. I'm sure they'll just take it to heart that you couldn't do a thing with those cursing and buffing songs of yours." He rolled his eyes slightly, shaking his head. "Though in my own way, I do plan to beat the system, so I suppose I can't really comment on that..."
He leaned forward, resting his chin on his folded hands. He looked almost bored, and indeed, gave a small yawn as he looked upon Silence, tilting his head slightly in a look that was almost quizzical. The warlock was apparently quite whimsical. "Not all of a Warlock's eldritch ability focuses on ranged attacks with massive blasts of magic, you know. So long as I don't stand back and spear someone from across the room with my Eldritch abilities, which by the way are not necessarily magic but more of a manifestation of my will, there are no arcane methods used in my abilities, then I should be fine."
The hand opposite the one he had tilted his head towards, his left, unlocked itself from its partner, waving lazily in the air as he flipped it dismissively. "Besides. We Warlocks are known to be a bit more resilient than our more... sorcerous... counterparts. We know how to handle ourselves in a fight, and if given proper armor, we can actually make rather good melee fighters. Combined with my plans for the Eldritch... Well, I should prove at least a match for those that come in the tournament."
"Besides. As I said... Even if I lose, I'll win." He left it at that, his hand again joining its partner to cradle his head. "Now, since I have given such a forthright answer, I think it's time to put to you a question of my own."
He yawned again, his eyes drifting half closed as though he didn't actually care WHAT she answered. "Just whom is it that you seek to protect here, and what do you hope to gain in this tournament besides the opportunity to meddle? Thus far you have shown great intelligence, and you seize opportunities when they are presented to you... You haven't truly engaged me in anything that would bring any consequence to you. Indeed, you have boldly given me an idea of what you are going to do when the matches happen. But yet you are still hiding something. You wouldn't present ALL of your cards too quickly." He reasoned, one eye opening again, while the other fell completely closed.
"So just what are you seeking here? Truly? You don't seem the type to settle for just chaos."

OOC: But I like sitting around on my lazy ass all day!
IC: Nasher sighed, slightly put off by the show of respect. He patted on the bowing inspector's shoulders, then beckoned him to rise. "Now then, I chose you for your position based on your skill, not your formalities. And it is the former that we need here." Waving for Soujourn to follow, Nasher couldn't help but miss some of his old advisers and captains. They knew when a good time for respect from a good time for action. The old man had outlived most of them. Well, he thought, the Inspector would learn such things soon enough.
As they began walking, Lord Nasher continued, "So I take it you haven't seen any activity from the two guilds yet, have you? Anything at all yet - I heard that an emissary of Zhentil Keep arrived here even. Do make sure you find him and keep close watch on him."
