My next topic of complaint: Good Rps that never make it. Either they get you hooked and then stop, or else they never go anywhere in the first place. I'd like to start by listing RPs that I want to see reinvented (note: not restarted. Restarting old RPs never work). *The Dragons Saga by FC4 *The Riders by Half Tooth *The Rise of the Nightingale by Luagar And various other very clever or well-made RPs- there is a particularly long list of clever freeforms that I can't remember the names of. Basically, I want to see these back- or at least something to be done with their clever ideas. Decent Dragon rps are so hard to find, and I miss that, although Dragons was a little too closely policed for my liking (but I imagine that happens with time...) The Riders was a work of art. Based on the Eragon principal (but using unicorns) it was really, really fun. I want that back too, and as far as I know, nobody has tried to make one like it. Disappointed. And Rise of the Nightingale was a fantastic idea that sadly moved to fast for me, particularly when I had to go on holiday for god knows how long (I hate holidays... *looks grumpy* But for another time...) Very rarely is something so beautifully crafted from lore, to the point where you think 'hey, maybe there'll be something like this later in the game series?' Anyway, gripes over.

Oh, I would LOVE to see Dragons reinvented. I absolutely adored the old Dragons, and Flame Dancer was by far my best, deepest, and most intriguing character I have ever created... I would love to create another Dragon, and Bloodlust him. As for Riders, I enjoyed it, though it seemed to lose its drive after a while. It became basically pointless wandering, and even ended in the DEATH of my Unicorn, essentially ruining the character I had created. It quite irritated me to have Perur end up shafted like that, and end up dying simply because I couldn't think of anything for him to do anymore, without being a Rider. It would be good to reinvent as well, though, yet I have nothing that truly crops to mind to rejuvinate it with. The last one, I have never heard of.

Dragons did indeed get a little too structured and linear as it neared the end, and I do sort of regret that, but it was part of my experimenting as a host, and developing the story. It had become such a central part. It's sort of hard to remake the Dragon's Saga, actually. The actual SAGA wasn't even borne from myself, but from the mixture of Adeth's imaginative evils and my manipulative tendencies. Each Dragon's chapter had introduced something new. Taint, the bloodlust and Shadowhand, which became central for the entire series. Purification, the villain who is also the hero, a dichotomy that resulted in interesting scenarios and dilemmas. Only once did this villainous dichotomy receive an attempted recreation, and that was in one of AP's old, failed rps, and not entirely the same principle. Dark Crusade eliminated the Bloodlust, but brought in villainy of a caliber rarely seen on the boards; a sexually perverted, truly heartless being. It also brought a new power, Daea, the opposite of magic. The last was probably the most unique, as I have yet to see an rp take place in the first era of man, or feature time manipulation. Sadly... by this time it got so difficult to manage I lost interest in it. Which leaves me to the question of which innovative aspect of the Saga WOULD you want recreated? Just the Bloodlust? The dual-natured villainy? The Daea? The time? Riders had a lot of promise... but went downhill sorta fast. I'm hoping to get Stranded to completion, and soon introduce one of the major aspects of the RP that might make it somewhat more interesting. Of course... I'm waiting for you to post, IN.

Yeah, I lost interest in the Dragon's series due mainly to the separation of the two main parties, combined with time travel (I HATE time travel!), and some bad character decisions (WTH was I thinking with turning Shelby into a vampire thingy! She's got enough problems to deal with!)
Voideye I loved as a character, just unquestionably evil in everything he says or does, incapable of caring for anyone but himself. One of the best villains ever, IMO.
On the subject of romance, in retrospect I dislike her romance with Horus; it did feel a bit too rushed and shallow, and they weren't really all that well suited for each other (and not because of age). Her budding (but never fully realized) relationship with Flame Dancer was much more maturely done and moved at a more realistic pace, and I don't think anyone who read/participated in it can deny that they were/would have been a much better couple.
If DDC were reinvented, I'd definitely be rolling a dragon this time around and bloodlusting the hell out of it.
The Riders I liked, just hated the character I used for it. I'd definitely do that with a different character.

Heheh. Yeah, I loved the way Flame Dancer's feelings for her played out. Nearly broke the guy at first, sent him into a spiral that triggered his Bloodlust and nearly got him to kill everyone else in the group, then kind of turned into a quiet, unspoken longing, to something that was known but not quite capitalized upon, and then destroyed in the firestorm that Dragons became. How tragic, that was the longest I've ever spent on a romance. But yes, we need to hog-tie FC4, and force him to bring back the Dragons-style RP. ;D

LOL. By the way: you haven't seen villain until you see Web's character for Beacon. Masterpiece, I swear. We have a pretty good evil side going on there, to the point that I've had to begin de-evilling the bad side so that good has a slightly better chance.

Well, you won't have to de-evil it for long. Web's character is pretty evil.... but not in the same way. He has scruples and morals, limited and shallow as though they may be. He's nasty, vile, and self serving, but not wholly EVIL.
Dunno. If you want a nerdish analogy, he's worse than Darth Vader, but nowhere near the Emperor.
But yes, regardless of differing opinion, it is a masterpiece of a character. You won't get an argument out of me on that.

I feel like characters that aren't born with a wish to destroy all existence but are still evil, and much more believable. Afterall, evil people don't believe their evil: they believe, in their mind, that they're doing what's 'right', whether for all humanity, or for themselves. Even the Emperor, I suspect, is like that: he's just looking for more power for himself, and doesn't waste needlessly. Notice that he conquers more than he mindlessly destroys.
Bad guys that have some shred of humanity left are much more interesting to me. Then, you're always left hanging, wondering 'will they turn good'? But then they get gradually worse, even if at moments it's almost like they're a real, good person, and it's quite soul destroying to see them choose themselves over the rest of humanity.
I am always into soul-destroying stuff. Characters that break your heart or frustrate you are far more interesting than characters that constantly do horrifying stuff. With them, it's just like 'I saw that coming'. And predictability is the bane of interest.

Voideye was indeed horridly evil, but I did twist him near the end, by adding in an aspect to him that was actually there all along; he had a purpose in his evil. He believed he was helping his 'god', Sithis. So it was sort of a religious, zealous evil. I actually planned all along for him to turn to the good side in the following chapter, helping stop Shadowhand, but still being bad and bickering with the group.
Still doesn't answer the question, though... what aspect of Dragon's should I focus on, if I were to remake it?

The Dragon bit. It might be interesting to do a Dragon's based around a completely different plotline (as in, no more Shadowhand...) because if you continue with the old plot, nobody who isn't you, Fanchon and Web will find it easy to join in with. Perhaps doing a Dragon's based around man and dragon relations? A war between the two could prove interesting. But then, I'm no dragon's veteran, so I don't know what you're willing to do or not.

That was, ironically, the original intent of Dragon's Taint! To be a freeform rp of Dragons against men... but that is a somewhat hard one to moderate well, or even design a plot for at all.
Maybe I shouldn't design a plot for it, period. Hmmm... I'll take it into consideration. Anything else?

Make a thread for this, so we can discuss this there. You are taking up valuable gripe-space. I know that on Illusionaria we don't actually believe such a thing as 'on-topic' exists, but I want to be grumpy more than helpful.

Today's grumpiness involves Real Life, and why it can't be possible to have one as well as be an active RPer. I hate not being able to be active as much as I know many people hate others not being active (and indeed, I often do as well...)
It's a shame RPing is so emotionally draining for some folks- myself included. A lot of the time, RPing is a sort of release, but when you're having really rough times or are particularly busy, it just becomes one more thing to be stressed about, which sucks, really.
