Discuss anything related to general roleplaying here: acomplishments, personal tips, strategies in character making, proper roleplaying, etc.
I'll start with my views on what makes a roleplay good or popular
can a roleplay make you feel like you can fly? propably not, but I came quite close to the feeling a good few time in my roleplaying lifetime. one of thise times was three days ago exactly one year ago, on the 16th/17th of april 2008 I found a roleplay with an interesting name"Moonlit Summer Nights" I checked it out and it was about a somewhat sciencefiction polar expedition on the south pole which would result in the group finding a marooned alien whom would fall in love with one of the crew before taken away by the funding organisation for all sorts of experiments, naturally the group would decide that wasn't going to happen and go after her. Somehow such a simple storyline flipped a switch in my head as I instantly loved it and could only start thinking of the sheer amount of possibilities of posts I could write for that roleplay, I quickly secured my position as cameraman on the expedition and brought in my own sci-fi ROV for the expedition.
So? Did any of you have such an experience where you just knew you would enjoy a roleplay from start to finish and was going to stay in no matter what?

Three words. The Dragons Saga. There has never been a roleplay that has sucked me in so entirely, or that I have enjoyed quite as much as I did in the Dragons Purification, Dark Crusade, and it's final chapter, which I can never remember the name of. I created my best character that I have ever created for that RP (Even the great Janus falls short of Flame Dancer, though I still hate the name I came up with.), who held one of the most long-lasting, maturely done romances that I have ever written, gave birth to one of my best scenes (Bloodlust!), and overall become so much deeper of a character that I had ever envisioned... And the plot kept me coming right back for more, constantly wanting to delve deeper into the weave that FC4 had masterfully lain out. Good times, good times... I miss them. Nowadays, it's getting harder to find an RP like that.

I'd first like to point out that I've never actually seen an RP from start to finish. So many of them die out within a few weeks (at best)...
But from the list of those in which I've participated: Bioshock, and...well, that's the only one I can think of, that lasted long enough to be considered an almost 'complete' RP. It was an excellent combination of my characters with the setting. Marinus was endlessly entertaining to work with in Lycan's dystopia (I've done well in every RP I've put him in...I should use him more), and the second character, Quentin, was a perfect punching bag for Paradise's mad inhabitants.
But there are others I've enjoyed immensely that never got off the ground. Life in Tamriel was very good while it lasted. I loved Illusionary's concept for Tamrielic Dragons- I'm disappointed not only that I missed the original, but also that the remake faded away so quickly. Same for Blood of the Ancients (I had the bad timing of starting to RP right after Illusionary and HK dropped off of the forums for a long while). Terra Guild was pretty good, but again, it was apparently a huge success in its original incarnation, and I missed the boat, again. Ah, but I did enjoy BSparrow's Whodunit RP (I swear the assassin was FC).

Ah yes, Bioshock. That's another one that sucked me in quite entirely, and that managed to develop a character beyond what I thought possible, it's just disappointing the way it ended. Kind of died without really putting up much of a fight in the end... >_> <_< Yeah, I have no idea who the assassin was. xD

I'd have to say my first RP, The Longest Journey, was fantastic. It was before character sheet approval, and before non-ubering, but somehow we all knew the rules, except for one character who became the unofficial villain. Even when Halfy left for two weeks, we kept it running in her absence, and it was still fantastic. I will never forget it.
I was so disappointed with the remake, I could have cried. It had none of the 'we're the bad guys, but we're the protagonists' thing of the first, and it seemed mostly like a lonely hearts club, although I know some people enjoyed it greatly.
The original BotA was great in its early-mid days, when it was just me, Elgen, Skooma and occassionally Uglius. We had good fun in that, and I left a stream of dead characters behind me the likes of which has never before been seen. It was only when things became complicated that it became too much for me, and I grew to hate it towards the end.
Rewriting History is my RP, but its my favourite, and not because of the story. The character dynamics have been like a dream. Even now, there is tons of distrust and barriers between all the main characters, and you never get that in RPs. After the first day, usually, everyone saves each other and proves their worth, and three or four of them have fallen in love. In RH, half the people tried to save each other, half the people couldn't be assed, and then when we rested an actual fight broke out and my character nearly got lynched in her sleep by a secret vampire.
Awesome.

They're practically designed to alienate themselves from the group, and only mix in when they want to mess things up and piss off everyone in the party to cause in fighting. Though, admittedly, it's precisely the reason you stated that I create them like that... I try to force people to shatter the norm in order to deal with me. It works, every now and again. xD

It often seems that RPs have so many characters trying to shatter the norm, that normal characters are an absolute oddity.

Rewriting history is REALLY awesome. I enjoy the direction its going in, I like what I did with Fin, and I like the people I'm in it with. Despite constant in fighting and mishaps, we stick together like a badly glued together junk-metal sculpture. Ahh, the family warmth that emanates from that RP.

BotA was cool. In the old days, that is. I haven't really read the remake, but can't say I like the whole remake-story.

Both of my roleplays (vain I know, but ah well!) and The Longest Journey when I was actually in it. My computer koncked out I think and I didn't get to see it finish but ah well.
I haven't been in a lot of long lasting roleplays, but Rewriting History has a lot of potential and I'm enjoying it immensely for the one part I've been in.

Hey! Raven is my Agent! Sweet!
Also, the Longest Journey looked good, just too complicated for me to get into.

Yeah the Longest Journey was a nice one although I never really got any character in it for a decent amount of time. but it's a shame it didn't get to it's full potential some times such as putting emphasis that innocent/good people have to face the fact that the entire population of the empire is against them.but if there will ever be a Longest journey 2.5 or something I don't think i'll join it without hesitation (all characters were a big depressing lot if you ask me, that's why i tend to steer clear of Vamp roleplays these days)

Yeah, I've never been in an RP that went to completion, though hearing about some of these make me jealous. Particularly Blood of the Ancients after FC4 explained it to me. Then again, I've only been in a dozen or two RPs at all
