It is said that mages are untrustworthy. Some might be more wary than usual in a Mages Guildhall, and more careful about what they say, and what is said to them. It is even said by the more vocal critics of magic that the average mage is twice as shrewd as an Imperial merchant, and half as scrupulous.
In House Telvanni, most of these critics have long since perished from a series of mysterious lightning storms in their living rooms.
In Second Seed, 3E 431, three months after the fall of Dagoth Ur, the Tribunal Temple is falling in a storm of fire. Weakened by the loss of their most powerful allies, House Redoran is finally showing signs of faltering in the face of joint Hlaalu and Indoril pressure. In the eastern side of Morrowind, however, a power shift of a slightly smaller scale was taking place.
Edd Theman, the Mouth of Reynel Uvirith of Tel Uvirith, received a message by courier-scamp that Mistress Uvirith had been found dead in her quarters at Tel Uvirith. Normally, considering that being a member of House Telvanni tends to be a high-fatality job in itself, this would not be a very noteworthy event. But as chance would have it, it did become a very noteworthy event, not because Reynel Uvirith was a very important person, but because she had controlled Tel Uvirith.
The lonely spire of Tel Uvirith was not considered a desirable place of residence. What did set it apart from most other Telvanni territories was that, unlike many recent Telvanni expansions, Tel Uvirith was a completely legal, legitimate tower, approved by Duke Vedam Dren for construction. For the Telvanni, this meant a permanent branch into what might have been land for Redoran claims or Imperial business ventures.
Nobody really bothered to figure out who had killed Reynel Uvirith. For the lower ranking house members, this was because they knew that it was generally unwise to poke their noses into the business of someone that had the ability to kill a Telvanni Mistress. The higher ranking members, on the other hand, just viewed an investigation as being a bit pointless. Plenty of people were likely candidates for Uvirith’s murderer. A rival mage, an ambitious subordinate, or some third party; it didn’t really matter. She was dead, and that was that. Their main concern at present was the claim to the tower.
Edd Theman left Sadrith Mora shortly after the report of murder. He had no desire to get in the way of the ravenous beast that was heated Telvanni politics. Farena Arelas, a resident of Tel Uvirith and former subordinate of Reynel Uvirith, was highly vocal in her request for ownership of the tower. However, Gorven Menas, alchemist and ranking house member at Tel Uvirith, disputed this claim just as strongly, secretly fearing that Farena’s promotion would mean either her dismissal or death. Instead, Gorven sent word to Port Telvannis that a new head of Tel Uvirith was needed. In doing so, she had the chance of getting a leader that did not know any of them, thus circumventing the chance of any threats to her position.
The Telvanni leaders at Port Telvannis couldn’t have been more delighted to oblige.
The Vvardenfell branch of House Telvanni was practically rogue, in their eyes. There was little or no contact between the island and the mainland branches of the house, and the Vvardenfell members were virtually free of regulation - even more so than the mainland ones. To have one of their own members at the head of a tower on Vvardenfell was the chance for a foothold they could not pass on. Within a week of receiving word from Gorven, a candidate was sent from Port Telvannis by teleportation to Sadrith Mora, along with any of the candidate’s cohorts that desired to come.
Farena, back on Vvardenfell, had other plans. She began to send word to any Telvanni looking for an opportunity (potential allies, in her eyes) to support her claims to Tel Uvirith. Even if she had to prove that she had the right to the title.

Welcome to the roleplay! As written in the OP, this takes place a few months after the Nerevarine’s victory. You, the player, have several options of roles for this story, such as:
-The candidate from Port Telvannis. Being as this is a pretty big role, I ask those interested in it to PM me a sample piece of writing in-character before I approve your character as the candidate.
-One of the candidate’s supporters. Obviously, they will start with the candidate.
-Farena. Only if someone desires, they may take up the role of Uvirith’s former ambitious mage. Farena is Telvanni through and through, and has no qualms with sucking up to the right people and turning around to use them as a stepping stone in the same breath. If no one wants her role, I’ll take it on.
-Farena’s supporters. They’ll be the ones who received a letter from her. She isn’t pleasant to work with, but the offer of a position at Uvirith would be tempting to just about any Telvanni.
-Someone else. There are plenty of people who might want something to do with Tel Uvirith. The Mages Guild might be interested in the nearby Dwemer ruin sites, and there is a shrine of Molag Bal nearby, for example. You’re the player, you decide.
All in all, I plan on having moderate to minimal interference. Obviously, the basic plot is about who gets control of Tel Uvirith, with all its trappings and Dwemer Centurion guards and lovely scenic vistas of lava and ash. I will move the plot along if everyone gets stuck at some point, but feel free to have your own sub-plots involved. Just remember that this is not a freeform. I would prefer it if most things were kept at least somewhat relevant to the plot.
Rules:
-The usual ones, like no overpowered characters or ones that horribly violate lore or common sense; no character control, no ubering. Yes, even if you are the candidate. You will be playing a powerful mage, not a god. Post accordingly.
-Romance is fine, just don’t get graphic.
-No vampires or werewolves. Yes, I know there is a vampire lair practically next door to Tel Uvirith. And yes, I know Telvanni are somewhat tolerant of vampires. But do not want them as characters here. Sorry.
-Have fun, of course.
NOTE! If you have no idea what House Telvanni is and have no idea what most of the names in the OP were, read this! If you’ve played Morrowind, though, just ignore this.
House Telvanni is one of the three Great Houses on Vvardenfell, populated by powerful mage-lords. They are renowned for cutthroat politics and an almost complete lack of rules besides Survival of the Fittest. They hold most of eastern Morrowind, and their cities are dominated by huge mushroom-tree-towers, which are the homes of their nobles and leaders. Tel Uvirith is one of these. Sadrith Mora is the seat of power in House Telvanni. Port Telvannis is a massive port city on the mainland, and a central seat of power among the mainland Telvanni. Lower ranking members of House Telvanni can expect to do menial chores and tasks for their superiors, or meet quick deaths at the hands of rivals or magical accidents. Slavery is a major source of labor and income for the Telvanni, and Argonian and Khajiit slaves are a common sight around the mushroom towers. Feel free to ask any other questions.
I’m not going to be very restrictive in this RP, so relax and enjoy yourself. And, eh...this is kind of experimental. I have never run an RP of this genre, so I have no prediction of its success or failure. Enjoy!
